Digital Spectrum Memory Frame Mf-801 Manual

. ProsGreat photo quality. 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi connectivity. Displays images from Flickr, Microsoft Live Spaces, and Webshots online photo services.

256MB internal memory. Video and MP3 playback. Remote control. ConsExpensive. Interface could be better.

Sluggish response. Lengthy boot-up time. No file-folder structure. Bottom LineThis pricey frame can wirelessly display pics from your PC and online photo-sharing accounts, but with sluggish response and a confusing interface, there are plenty of better, lower-priced options.Digital Spectrum's $349.99 MemoryFrame MF-8104 Premium can display photos wirelessly and sports a larger screen and more storage capacity than other frames I've tested. But its poorly designed interface and sluggish response make it difficult to recommend. The MF-8104 Premium delivers clear, crisp photos on its sprawling 800-by-600-pixel, 10.4-inch LCD.

Measuring 11.7 by 10 by 2 inches (HWD) and weighing 3.9 pounds, the frame has several appealing features, including a clock, audio-out for connecting to a stereo, a USB port for viewing photos from a thumb drive, and a mini USB for connecting it to your computer. It's powered by a 12-volt adapter with a power brick and a conveniently long cord. Manual controls on top of the frame provide entry to the menu system. The included remote control grants one-touch access to slide-show mode, volume controls, setup options, and page up and down buttons for easily scrolling through photos. After booting up, which takes a painfully long 25.6 seconds, and inserting a memory card, the frame automatically enters slide-show mode.

It can read BMPs, GIFs, JPEGs, and PNGs on CompactFlash, Memory Stick PRO, MultiMedia, and Secure Digital memory cards. For viewing photos on an xD card, you need to use the included USB card reader. The frame shows 18 image thumbnails at a time, which is great for viewing a handful of photos at once. Still, the interface could be better. I found the menu system far from intuitive. For instance, just to play music you must navigate through five screens. And the frame doesn't offer an on-screen file-management system for creating folders right on the screen and playing photos only from that folder.

(However, you can choose which photos to display during slide-show playback.) And the response time for choosing options and browsing photos from the frame and the remote is rather sluggish. The device offers a generous 256MB of onboard memory for storing photos, and you have the ability to select individual images to play in slide-show mode. Various slide-show effects include sequential or random playback; 11 transitions such as box tile and wipe right/wipe left; and slide durations of 5 seconds up to 1 hour. One unique feature of this frame is that it's preconfigured to display photos from online photo services such as Flickr, Microsoft Live Spaces, and Webshots. Although I was able to log in to my Flickr account through the frame and view my images, the device doesn't let you copy photos over from Flickr. This means that once your live Internet connection is lost, you also lose access to your online pics.

In addition, many photo-sharing sites compress images to a lower quality, often causing them to appear distorted on the frame.Photos can be streamed wirelessly through an 802.11b/g connection with unprotected, WEP, and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) networks. (You can enter a network password, if one is required.) Once connected to the desired network, I was able to share photos with my Vista-equipped Toshiba Satellite P205 notebook via Windows Media Player 11. The frame automatically saves connection settings for previously accessed networks.

Unless you have an 802.11b or g network, you'll likely be out of luck; I couldn't get the frame to recognize a draft-n network during testing. For music playback, Digital Spectrum claims the device supports MP3, WAV, and WMA files, the latter of which wouldn't play during testing. MP3 and WAV files sounded great through the integrated speakers. The frame handles videos in WMV format with sound, and they looked acceptable on the 10-inch screen.
